The Tanner's frame forms an A on each side: the front and rear legs lean toward each other and meet the curved arm rail at the top. The rounded taupe back hangs from that rail on two leather-look straps, which is both the detail people notice and the way the back is held.
Construction. Solid hardwood frame, black stain. The arm rail is laminated and curved, joined to the legs with glued mortises and reinforced with a cross-stretcher on each side. The back is an upholstered board strapped to the rail and screwed to the rear seat rail; the seat is an upholstered cushion on a plywood pan.
Where it works. Modern bistros, hotel restaurants, wine bars and cafe-restaurants with a dark, graphic interior. The A-frame is very stable, so it suits rooms with uneven floors or outdoor-facing terraces under cover.
Options. Black, walnut or natural frame; seat and back in contract vinyl, leather or fabric; straps matched or contrasting. The splayed legs take a little more floor than a straight-leg chair, so allow about 23 in (58 cm) per chair along a table edge.
