On the Pemberton, the back pad is not part of the frame at all. A curved arm rail wraps the chair at elbow height, and the taupe upholstered back pad is mounted on a bent plywood carrier that springs slightly as the guest leans back.
Construction. Solid hardwood frame in a warm, light walnut tone. The curved arm rail is laminated and joined to the front legs and back posts; side stretchers tie the legs. The bent-ply back carrier is screwed to the rear of the seat frame, and the padded back pad is fixed to it. The seat is an upholstered cushion on a plywood pan, removable from below.
Where it works. Hotel dining, brasseries, modern Asian restaurants and office dining rooms where you want comfort for a full meal and a warm timber look.
Options. Natural, walnut or dark stain; seat and back pad in contract vinyl, leather or fabric; matching side chair without arms. The flex in the back carrier is modest and comes from the plywood itself, not from hardware, so there are no springs to wear out.
